About Tone Deaf Theatre Company
Tone Deaf Theatre Company was founded in 2010 by Doug Gibbs, Chris Guard, and Tom Wynter, with the intention of performing small cast modern musicals. After a successful initial venture with ‘EDGES’ which went on to win several awards at Sheffield Drama Festival, the company became a well-known force in Durham musical theatre, following up with their critically acclaimed production of ‘FRESHER: The Musical’.
Over the last few years, TDTC has continued to produce high-quality, award-winning productions such as '[title of show]', 'Ordinary Days’ and our annual musical showcases. They have found success on a national scale, with their production of 'The Last Five Years' being one of 15 shows selected for the 2018 National Student Drama Festival. In 2022, they made their Edinburgh Fringe debut with Brewer and Drake's 'The Single Lady'. In the past year alone, TDTC has produced a SELLOUT productions of Jonathan Larson's RENT and Tick, tick...BOOM! alongside other phenomenal shows such as 'Pippin,' 'Title of Show,' their bi-annual showcases, and their workshop musical, 'Let Your Eagles Fly.'
We welcome all Durham students to get involved in our shows, onstage or off; auditions and production team opportunities will always be advertised through the DST newsletter. For more information about the company or upcoming productions, please contact tonedeaf.tc@durham.ac.uk or message us through one of our social media platforms.

The Founding Exec
Doug Gibbs, Chris Guard, Tom Wynter
Doug Gibbs - Doug graduated from law in 2012. In his three years, he was involved in around thirty productions as an actor or director, and was treasurer of DULOG 2011/12. In 2010, he set up TDTC, as president and director, with Chris and Tom, to produce ‘EDGES'. After graduating, Doug studied a Master's in the Netherlands and worked overseas in Cairo and Strasbourg. He is now a commercial lawyer in London, but continues to be involved in amateur theatre, performing in and directing shows with RTC, a group of DULOG alumni.
Chris Guard - Chris studied very little mathematics for his degree. Music, and musical direction, quickly became how he spent almost all of his four years at Durham. After graduating, he went on to study Musical Direction and Coaching at the Royal Academy of Music before becoming a full-time professional musical director. Since then, he has worked on numerous productions and projects, ranging from the West End and national tours to film and television, as well as teaching and accompanying in several leading drama schools.
Tom Wynter - Tom graduated in 2012 with a degree in PPE. He was involved with a broad range of productions whilst at Durham, from musical theatre to site specific performances across Durham, Edinburgh, and at the Tower of London. Tom now lives and works in Asia, where the access to theatre is more limited than he would like.
